The Perfect Basement Apartment

About Me

The Perfect Basement Apartment

When we got married, my husband and I moved into a lovely brick home. Because we were young and in debt, we would have benefited from being able to rent out a portion of our home to tenants. Unfortunately, our home didn’t include a basement apartment. If your basement is currently not being used, consider transforming it into a basement apartment. Before renting it out to tenants, you will need to make sure it meets certain specifications. For example, most local governments require basement apartments to contain a certain amount of windows. Usually, you will also have to ensure that your windows meet size requirements. On this blog, you will discover how to create the perfect basement apartment with the right windows.

Investing In Replacement Windows? Questions Homeowners Should Consider

Chances are, if you have lived in your home for several years or have just purchased one that was constructed a decade or more ago, you have toyed with the idea of investing in replacement windows. You may be surprised, however, to learn that doing so has both pros and cons. If you are wondering whether doing so is best for your situation, here are some questions that will help guide your decision.

Are the current windows in good condition?

Of course, the first question you should always ask yourself before buying replacement windows is whether your home's current windows are still in serviceable condition. If your current windows are intact, still able to open, close, and lock securely, and do not present a potential for air leakage, you may not actually need to upgrade.

Will your current windows affect your resale potential?

Even windows that are functioning properly, however, should be considered for replacement in some instances. One of the most common reasons for this is when they might have a negative effect on your resale potential. Windows that are in good condition, but mismatched as a result of more than one renovation in the past can be a definite turnoff for buyers.

Additionally, if your current windows are very small or there are too few of them, your home may not have the potential for natural light and fresh air flow that today's buyers want to find. Lastly, if the windows pose a security risk, such as having locks that are easy for burglars to open, upgrading to more secure replacement windows can be a good selling point, especially for homes located in areas where home invasions and burglaries are increasing.

Is UV protection a concern?

A good reason to consider upgrading to new replacement windows is to help protect your home and its occupants from UV radiation. This type of radiation is now known to be linked to the development of skin cancer and some other types of problems. Many replacement windows available now are manufactured to offer high levels of UV protection without affecting the view or the amount of natural light they allow into the home.

Should you consider replacing windows as a DIY project?

While many homeowners with basic construction skills are successfully able to complete a window replacement project, the process can be very time-consuming. If you are planning to replace all or several windows in your home, it can make sense to hire a reputable replacement window installer.
